I am one of three art teachers at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, SC. I am currently teaching all levels including IB visual arts. I have just completed my eighth year at Hanna. I graduated in 2003 from Anderson College (now Anderson University) in the Art Education program. I went to school on a full athletic scholarship as a member of the Womens Golf team. I have been married to my husband Gary for 32 years and have 3 children, Julie, John, and Jamie. Julie is an attorney in Columbia, SC, John is a full time student at Anderson University, and Jamie lives in Brooklyn, NY working in the film industry in set design.
I wanted to get my AP certification to take our program to a higher level. This will encourage growth in the visual arts not only at our school, but for our district as well.
2. What is your greatest concern/challenge about starting an AP program at your school?
Although I have the support of administration, I do forsee issues with our limited budget. While this is a concern, I do think we are and have been extremely resourceful in these matters and will find a way to succeed no matter what! Our school is implementing an A/B schedule for the upcoming year and this could prove to be difficult as far as scheduling is concerned--seat time requirements etc...
3. How might you use the Columbia Museum resources in your classroom?
We have the available technology at our school to enable students to search and use this resource. Our art students have the opportunity to view videos therefore using resources such as this to enhance their learning and production. Opportunites such as these informs students of the wealth of resources and actual exhibitions within their community and state.
4. What museum/art center do you have in your area that could be a great resource for an advanced art program?
The Anderson Art Center and the Belton Arts Center---They have ongoing exhibitions, classes and resources
