We have the Greenville County Art Museum, Fine Arts Center, SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, Metropolitan Arts Council - the MAC sponsors Open Studios in the fall. Open Studios is an event that I require my advanced students to attend. There are over 100 local artists involved and their studios are open to visitors.
The Bob Jones Museum in Greenville is first rate and a real jewel many people aren't aware of. They are very visitor friendly. The collection is large and the focus is on religious art from early Renaissance through the 1700's. There is a lot more for the artist than just the religious context, so don't let that keep you away.
Suzan listed most of the museums that I am familiar with in Greenville. There is also Artisphere evey year, which includes artist from all over who come to sell and display their art.It is free to the public and Greenville County High Schools also have thier art show at this time. Also Frank mentioned Bob Jones Museum, they not only have a large permanent collection, but they also do an exhibit where they recreate works using real people!
The Gibbes Museum of Art, Redux Contemporary Art Center, and The Halsey Institute/Gallery (at the College of Charleston). We also have Kulture Klash twice a year which is an artists-driven event. Students who want to go do so independently of the school (its at night) and there are a number of openings at some of the bigger galleries downtown, like Scoop, Robert Lange and the City Gallery.
I have the Chapman cultural center that features art shows done by different artists and students. The Spartanburg arts council also has a history museum. Since Greenville is not too far off from Spartanburg, there are many other museum resources in the Greenville area such as the Bob Jones Museum.
We have a museum in Greenwood. It isn't big but it has some shows and a few pieces in its permanent collection, and it is growing. It also works with schools in the area for school shows.
We have three - The Gibbes Museum of Art, Redux Contemporary Art Center, and The Halsey Institute/Gallery (at the College of Charleston).

ReplyDeleteThe Anderson Arts Center is the closest. Next year, I am looking into joining our middle school art teacher on her yearly trip to the High Museum.
